Power station or generator?

A fuel generator runs as long as you have fuel but must stay outdoors. A battery power station runs indoors but only as long as its charge.

Carbon monoxide: the deciding difference

The CPSC says an average of nearly 100 people die in the U.S. each year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by portable generators1. Its rules are blunt: operate portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet from the house, and never inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed space1.

The CPSC also advises battery-operated CO alarms, or alarms with battery backup, on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas1. Do that whatever you choose.

A battery power station has no engine and no exhaust, which is why it can sit next to a refrigerator or a bed.

Where each fits

  • Battery power station

Short and medium outages, indoor use, quiet, and electronics kept on through a switchover. Its limit is stored energy.

    Estimate runtime
  • Fuel generator

Long outages and heavy loads such as well pumps or central air, run outdoors under the CPSC's distance rule [1].

Outage features worth knowing

Many households use both: the generator outside by day, the battery inside overnight.

Some power stations add outage features: EcoFlow says the DELTA 3 Max has a Storm Guard Mode that watches severe weather alerts and starts charging from the wall ahead of a storm4.
